TRICENTENNIAL PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO ANNOUNCE DISTRIBUTION OF EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE MATERIALS

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas invests $300,000 in San Antonio history and education

On Sept 6, 2017 the Tricentennial Commission, UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas announced the release of the Official Tricentennial Educational Resource Materials. Based on the keynotes, breakout sessions and field trips that attendees of the San Antonio Tricentennial Summer Institute for Educators experienced, these lesson plans will help educators incorporate all aspects of San Antonio’s history into their classroom. Thousands of students Pre-K to 12th grade throughout San Antonio and Bexar County will have access to this curriculum for the 2017-2018 school year.

“The distribution of these Educational Resource Materials is a Legacy project of the Tricentennial Commission and falls in line with the organization’s guiding principles,” said Edward Benavides, Tricentennial Commmission CEO. “This is an important initiative that will solidify our legacy and teach our youth about our community’s history.”

The San Antonio Tricentennial Summer Institute For Educators, a weeklong training that took place in July, exposed San Antonio’s vibrant history. From subjects like San Antonio’s rich history to emerging industries in today’s workforce, the Institute exposed participants to resources that reflect San Antonio’s past, present and future.

“Response for the Institute was phenomenal with nearly 200 educators in attendance,” said Angelica Docog, Executive Director of the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures and Co-chair of the Tricentennial History and Education Committee. “The intensive workshops introduced the community’s history, provided educational resources, as well as prepared teachers to integrate these resources into their classroom. The TricentenniaI’s History and Education committee worked hard to make this program a reality for our City and County educational institutions.”

The production of the Tricentennial Educational Resource Materials was made possible through a generous donation of $300,000 by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, Inc.

“Our company is dedicated to the development of our community’s future, which are our students of San Antonio and Bexar County,” said Mario Lozoya, Director of Government Relations for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, Inc. “It is imperative for us to strengthen workforce development where we live and provide every child an opportunity to be successful after graduation. The Tricentennial Educational Resources will prepare our students to represent us with a clear understanding of our vibrant history and where we are headed as a community.”

Donated Artwork and Acquisitions

Two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork has been donated, purchased and lent to expand the interior art collection at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Renowned artists from San Antonio’s past, as well as contemporary working artists, will be permanently installed for a kick-off reception in 2018 that will also honor HemisFair-era legacy murals by Juan O’Gorman, Carlos Merida and Fred Samuelson. Included among these installations will be outdoor artworks gifted to San Antonio from Mexico

San Antonio Film Commission

Several contests and screenings, sponsored by the San Antonio Film Commission, will take place throughout 2018 that feature films made by local filmmakers and/or filmed on location in San Antonio that showcase the City’s history and vibrancy.

“Confluence: Art at the Convention Center” Exhibit

The City of San Antonio hosts an exhibit for the expanded art collection at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The expansion of the art collection, which opens in January 2018, is to complete the “San Antonio Story,” as told through the visual arts, reflecting the City’s growth and dynamic connections to Mexico and Texas history.

“30 Poems for the Tricentennial: A Poetic Legacy”

This initiative uses poetry to recognize the city’s historic anniversary and milestones before and during the founding of San Antonio, to evoke a sense of pride and passion for the City, while promoting the literary and visual arts.
